US, Europe, Ukraine discuss next steps toward ending Ukraine war, envoy Witkoff says
'Many additional details were discussed, and we will continue this important work and coordination in the New Year,' US envoy says
WASHINGTON
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said Wednesday that US officials held a "productive call" with European national security advisers and Ukraine's top negotiator to discuss the next steps in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Witkoff said he joined Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, in discussions with Jonathan Powell of the UK, Emmanuel Bonne of France, Gunter Sautter of Germany, and Rustem Umerov of Ukraine.
"We focused on how to move the discussions forward in a practical way on behalf of @POTUS’ peace process, including strengthening security guarantees and developing effective deconfliction mechanisms to help end the war and ensure it does not restart," Witkoff said on US social media company X.
He also said they exchanged views on a prosperity package for Ukraine, a joint roadmap for the country's economic development and reconstruction.
"Many additional details were discussed, and we will continue this important work and coordination in the New Year," Witkoff added.
On Sunday, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in the US state of Florida to discuss the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. Trump described the meeting as “wonderful,” saying few sticking points remained on the path to a peace agreement.
