GAZA CITY
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) plans to teach "unlicensed" curricula to Palestinian students that violate Islamic and Palestinian national principles, an official from Gaza's Education Ministry has said.
"This curriculum violates the Islamic religion, which bans the marriage of Muslim women to non-Muslims," the official told Anadolu Agency on Monday, requesting anonymity.
He argued that the new educational materials also overlook the British role in the Palestinian Nakba of 1948 – which coincided with the creation of Israel – and condemn Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation.
The official said that the UNRWA must obtain ministry approval before applying the curricula, threatening to take "robust measures" against the UN agency.
The new curriculum is expected to be taught to Palestinian students from fifth to ninth grades at UNRWA-run schools, according to the Gaza Education Ministry official.
AA could not obtain an immediate comment from the UNRWA on the allegations.
UNRWA runs a network of 703 schools in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, in which Palestinian students receive a basic education.
