An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 5.8 shook northeast Taiwan after hitting off the coast of Yilan County on Thursday, authorities confirmed.
According to Taiwan’s official Central News Agency, no causalities or damage were reported immediately after the initial temblor, which was followed by a magnitude 5.5 quake.
The Central Weather Bureau said the epicenter of the initial quake was located at sea at a depth of 17.5 kilometers (10.9 miles) at 11.17 a.m. (0317GMT).
In February, a magnitude 6.4 temblor left 117 people dead and more than 500 injured, the majority of whom had been inside a high-rise residential building that collapsed in the city of Tainan.
