JOHANNESBURG, South Africa
Anti-apartheid icon Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was admitted to a Cape Town hospital Tuesday evening for treatment of what his foundation referred to as a persistent infection.
The Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation did not reveal details about the illness the 83-year-old Nobel peace laureate is being treated for.
In 2013, Tutu was also admitted to a hospital for treatment of a similar infection.
The retired Anglican Archbishop, who rose to global fame in the 1980s for his struggle against South Africa’s brutal apartheid regime, has been receiving treatment for prostate cancer for many years.
