Imran Khan's anti-government supporters have staged sit-ins across Pakistan in a bid to raise the pressure on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down.
Sunday’s sit-ins in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad and several other cities came after talks between the government and the opposition, led by Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party, collapsed on Saturday.
Workers have sat outside Pakistan’s parliament building since August 14, calling for Sharif to resign over allegations of vote-rigging in last year’s general election.
Khan’s party is believed to have softened its demand for Sharif’s resignation and now will accept that he takes leave while a Supreme Court Commission is conducted into electoral malpractice.
However, the government rejected this lesser demand, terming it unconstitutional.
