WARSAW/BERLIN
Poland has expressed concern on Tuesday over reports that Russia has deployed nuclear capable missiles in its Baltic territory Kaliningrad.
“Plans to deploy new Iskander-M rockets in the Kaliningrad Oblast are worrying and Poland has stressed this on many occasions,” Poland’s Foreign Ministry said in response to questions by AA.
“We have obtained no official information from Russia on that matter. The latest news needs to be verified,” the MFA Press Office added.
German tabloid Bild claimed Saturday that Russia has deployed Iskander-M missiles near the Polish border and this has been revealed by recent secret satellite images.
Poland’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the issue may come to the agenda of the EU and NATO.
“It should be expected that the issue, given its importance to entire NATO, will be subject to potential consultations and actions in the NATO/EU forum,” the ministry told AA in a written statement.
“The dislocation of Iskander rockets in the Kaliningrad Oblast would contradict effective Polish-Russian cooperation, in particular with respect to this region, and undermine constructive dialogue between NATO and Russia,” the statement said.
“We will raise this topic in our bilateral contacts with the Russian side.”
