The 43rd executive board meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) held in the Iranian capital Monday.

At the two-day summit, which is being hosted by Iran’s official IRNA news agency, agencies talked about being more active in the Asia-Pacific region and less dependent on West-centered media.

The summit brings together directors and senior managers of news agencies from Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, China, Qatar, Oman, Mongolia, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Bulgaria as well as Iran.

Representatives from Anadolu Agency, the deputy chair of OANA, were present, including Deputy Director General Metin Mutanoglu, Marketing and Corporate Communications Director Yilmaz Yaman and Persian News Editor Hikmet Gok.

OANA was founded on Dec. 22, 1961, with the aim of promoting information exchange between regional news agencies.

It is the largest media organization for its geography and the volume of the news produced by its members. Forty-four member agencies from 35 countries provide two-thirds of the total volume of news produced throughout the world.

Azerbaijan's official news agency AZERTAC currently holds the presidency of OANA.

OANA’s next annual meeting will be held in Vietnam. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency will take over the organization's presidency for the 2019-2022 term.

IRNA announced its candidacy for the 2022-2025 term presidency at the current meeting in Tehran.
