BERLIN
Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc has called on the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Ukraine’s top cadre after 25 people were killed in clashes between government forces and protesters.
“The EU must immediately impose personal sanctions against those responsible for this violence in the Ukrainian government,” said Dr. Andreas Schockenhoff, Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU-parliamentary group, in a written statement on Wednesday.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) joint parliamentary group has urged both protestors and the security forces to end the violence and demanded the immediate withdrawal of security forces from the Independence Square.
“The way the Ukrainian government is directing its security and intelligence forces with utmost ruthlessness and use excessive force against demonstrators, journalists and civilian citizens is totally unacceptable,” CDU/CSU’s Schockenhoff stressed.
“President Viktor Yanukovych clearly bears the responsibility for the escalation of violence. Yanukovych is in no way ready for a genuine dialogue with the opposition for reaching a political compromise. He also has the primary responsibility for the extremely brutal crackdown by the security forces.”
