CAIRO
A Cairo court on Monday banned all unauthorized protests on university campuses.
An Egyptian lawyer had earlier filed a lawsuit to demand a ban on all campus demonstrations that were not pre-approved by university presidents.
The lawyer also called on police to disperse any campus protest the organizers of which had failed to obtain advance authorization.
Since Egypt's academic year began in September, several universities have been rocked by demonstrations opposing the July 3 military ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.
Al-Azhar University – a traditional stronghold for Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated students – has seen the most violent protests, with daily rallies often escalating into clashes between students and police.
