Three football fans are understood to have died from conditions brought about by a lack of sleep, as they had subjected themselves to marathon World Cup sessions.
China's Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday that a 39-year-old in Shanghai who suffered high blood pressure had died from a brain hemorrhage while watching Uruguay play Costa Rica on Saturday.
He reportedly had not slept for three nights in a row.
In Suzhou, near Shanghai, doctors reported that a 25-year-old fan had also died Saturday morning from excessive lack of sleep, but were undecided as to whether his death had been caused by sheer exhaustion or a possible heart attack.
Elsewhere, 51-year-old Li Mingqiang, a former professional footballer from Dalian city in northeastern Liaoning province, died from a heart attack after suffering sleep-exhaustion while watching the game between Spain and Holland.
China is 11 hours in front of 2014 FIFA World Cup hosts Brazil, meaning that games kick off in Beijing between midnight and 6 a.m.
