SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Twelve people have been detained by the Bosnia and Herzegovina Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) on suspicion of carrying out crimes against humanity in the city of Prijedor.
The arrest operation on Monday morning was launched in four different locations across Prijedor where numerous war crimes had been carried out against Bosniaks, or Bosnian Muslims, during the Bosnian War.
Twelve people between the ages of 43 and 71 were detained, SIPA reported in a written statement and taken to the SIPA headquarters in capital of Sarajevo for questioning.
Prijedor was the site of numerous war crimes carried out against Bosniak civilians by the Serb political and military leadership during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
About 5,200 Bosniaks and Croats were killed or disappeared during what became known as the Prijedor Genocide.
It was the second-largest massacre committed during the war after the Srebrenica Genocide, according to the Research and Documentation Center (IDC).
The city is known for its Catholic, Orthodox Christian and Islamic heritage.
