KABUL (AA) - Afghanistan have won the South Asian Games championship in football for the first time in their history.
The Afghan team defeated India 2-0 in the finals, with scores coming at 9' and 62'. The team received a winners’ trophy and a $50,000 prize.
President Hamid Karzai watched the game in the finals stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal.
"I would like to congratulate the team on this championship; our youth has proven that they are capable of achieving everything," he said.
The victory was celebrated in many cities around the country, particularly in capital Kabul, where celebrations lasting over five hours froze the traffic in the city center.
Afghanistan launched its national team in 1922, and became a member of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in 1948.
