At least seven soldiers were killed and 20 injured when a car bomb struck a military convoy in eastern Somalia on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said that a bomber blew himself up in a booby-trapped car in the semi-autonomous Puntland region.

"The explosion was powerful; it caused major damage," Puntland Health Minister Abdullah Ali told reporters.

He expected the death toll to rise further.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Somali authorities usually blame such attacks on the Al-Shaabab militant group.
