TRIPOLI (AA) – About 31.7 percent of eligible voters turned out in Thursday's election to elect members of Libya's constitution-drafting committee, the election commission said.
Over 1.4 million Libyans were eligible to vote to elect members of the 60-seat assembly.
A total of 649 Libyans had vied for a seat in the assembly, which is expected to draft Libya's first post-revolution constitution.
In a statement, the election commission said that it had worked hard to usher in appropriate conditions for voting in "an atmosphere of credibility and transparency".
It voiced satisfaction with the voting process despite some security violations, which, according to the panel, did not affect the voting process.
Meanwhile, Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said the election proceeded both "normally" and "ideally".
Libya's three regions are expected to contribute an equal number of representatives in the constitution-drafting committee.
Libya has remained in political crisis since the country's interim parliament in December voted to extend its mandate by one year.
It also extended by one year the transitional period instated following the fall of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.
The revised timetable has angered many Libyans, who have since taken to the streets to protest the decision and demand early elections.
