ISLAMABAD
Pakistani army jets pounded suspected militant hideouts and training centers in South and North Waziristan on Tuesday killing 30 “militants”, a senior military official who spoke to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity said.
The fresh air strikes targeted mainly Shawal, a stretch between North and South Waziristan and Dattakhel areas, where militants established centers to train new recruits and suicide bombers, the official said.
Some 15 “terrorists” were killed in parts of Dattakhel, the third largest town of North Waziristan, while 12 were killed in Shawal, he added. Three suspected militants were killed in bombardment in parts of the Garyoum area of North Waziristan.
Over 100 “militants” have been killed in ongoing bombardment in parts of North and South Waziristan since the peace talks between the government and the Taliban aimed at bringing a negotiated end to the 11-year long militancy in the country, collapsed on February 17 following two deadly attacks on security forces by Taliban earlier this month. However, it was impossible to verify that how many civilians have been killed in the air strikes due to remote nature of the affected areas, and absence of media there.
