KABUL (AA) - Twenty-six armed Taliban militants were killed and two others wounded in several operations staged by Afghan forces in various provinces of Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.
The Afghan Interior Ministry said on Wednesday the operations were carried out in the provinces of Nangarhar, Faryab, Kandahar, Uruzgan and Ghazni.
Six militants were also arrested in these operations.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, however, claimed the announced figures to be false.
This year, Afghan forces assumed total responsibility for security across the violence-wracked country, as US-led foreign forces prepare to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
The Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 before being ousted by US-led forces following the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington.
The Taliban have been battling Afghan troops and US-led foreign forces ever since.
