Republican Senator John McCain who supports arming Syrian opposition groups made a surprise visit to Syria and came together with dissident leaders in the war-torn country.
According to news reports of the US media, the Arizona senator headed to Syria via Turkey on Monday and returned back to Turkey after spending several hours in Syria.
McCain's spokeswoman Rachael Dean confirmed the US senator's Syria visit yet did not give any details regarding it.
Chief of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) General Salem Idris accompanied McCain during senator's meeting with opposition members across Syria.
According to the news report of the Daily Beast, which first reported the senator's visit, FSA leaders asked for an increase in the US support, including heavy weapons, a no-fly zone, and airstrikes on Syrian government and Hezbollah forces,
Speaking to the Daily Beast, Idris stated that the visit of McCain to Syria was very important and very useful especially at this specific time, Idris added, "In the scope of making a difference on the ground, we need the US support. We are in such a critical condition at the moment."
Meanwhile, the White House did not make any statements in regards to the senator's visit.
