A Turkish police officer has succumbed to injuries sustained in a counter-terrorism operation against the terrorist organization PKK in southeastern Turkey, an unnamed police source said on Thursday.
The officer was injured in an operation in Nusaybin, Mardin province, and was transferred to the Gulhane Military Medical Academy in the Turkish capital of Ankara about two weeks ago, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
Turkey’s southeast has been the scene of significant military operations since December as the police and army seek to clear the terrorist organization PKK from urban areas.
The group – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU – resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July.
Since then, more than 350 members of the security forces have been martyred and thousands of PKK terrorists killed.
