ANKARA
Turkish jets carried out airstrikes on suspected Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets in southeastern Turkey overnight, the Turkish military said on Tuesday.
According to the Turkish General Staff’s statement on its official website, the airstrikes targeted 17 "terrorist targets" around the Buzul Mountain and Ikiyaka region in Hakkari province.
Although the military did not specify any group by name in the statement, the “terrorist targets” are believed to be suspected positions of the outlawed PKK organization.
The operation follows a string of attacks against Turkish security forces Monday, which killed six personnel.
An attack on a police station in Istanbul early Monday left one police officer dead and wounded at least 11 people, including four other police officers.
In the southeastern province of Sirnak, four policemen were killed and another officer was injured in a roadside bomb attack. Another soldier was killed in an attack allegedly carried out by PKK militants on a military helicopter in Beytussebap district.
PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., EU and Turkey.
