LONDON
Turkish is one of ten languages listed in a British Council report released Wednesday as most vital to the UK in the next 20 years.
According to the "Languages for the Future" report of British Council, among Turkish language; Japanese, Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian and Russian were identified as the most vital languages to Britain over the next two decades.
The report said that the languages were chosen based on UK's development of the coming up 20 years and noted, "chosen languages were based on economic, geopolitical, cultural and educational factors including the needs of UK businesses, the UK's overseas trade targets, diplomatic and security priorities, and prevalence on the internet."
In addition, the report mentions that the chosen languages are not widely spoken in the UK, yet that the British government and business should cooperate to develop educational policy relating to languages and international skills, calling it, "as these have a direct impact on the UK's prosperity and international influence."
British Council notes that the report was prepared seeking to provide a strategic analysis of Britain's long-term language needs and that which languages would be of crucial importance for the country's prosperity, security and influence in the world in the years ahead.
