WASHINGTON
Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Victoria Nuland said that they thought Turkey's response to Syria after Syrian artillery shells that landed in south-eastern town of Akcakale killed 5 Turks and wounded 9 others yesterday was appropriate, balanced and was designed as a deterrent.
Speaking at a daily press briefing in Washington, Nuland said that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned Wednesday's incident in Akcakale and reiterated U.S. support for Turkey.
"Turkey responded to Syria with a Prime Ministry motion on Thursday which was approved by the Turkish Parliament and one that authorized the Turkish government to send troops abroad. The motion gives the Turkish government the power to respond in an appropriate manner if such an act against Turkey's sovereignty took place again," Nuland also said.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Susan Rice said on Thursday that bargaining was taking place at the UN Security Council so that the council condemned Syria's attack against Turkey.
Pentagon also stressed Turkey's sovereignty
Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), George Little said that they respected the right of self-defense displayed by Turkey after Syrian artillery shells landed in the south-eastern town of Akcakale yesterday killing 5 Turks and wounding 9 others.
