Turkish Red Crescent was elected to the management board of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as it seeks to play greater humanitarian role on the international level.
In the election of IFRC's management board, the Turkish organization received the highest number of votes after Spain, defeating the other candidates in Europe such as Britain, Denmark and Belgium.
Head of the Turkish Red Crescent, Ahmet Lutfi Akar, said that the selection of their organization shows the increasing prestige of Turkey on international level. “Turkey is a global actor now. We will try make sure that the aids reach the needy people in time” Akar told AA.
Turkish Red Crescent has a leading role in international humanitarian aids with the higher position in IFRC, Akar also added.
Turkey’s role in humanitarian affairs is rapidly growing in recent years, with considerable humanitarian assistance – food, medical care, shelter and clothing – to countries near and far.
The Red Crescent, Turkey's state-owned relief organization, also called Turk Kizilayi, was established in 1868.
The organization provides relief to those in need by mobilizing the power and resources of the community, supporting the enhancement of the community’s capacity to cope with disasters.
