The Syrian revolution, initiated with Syrian students' graffiti of anti-government slogans on the wall of a high school in the Syrian province of Der'a on March 15, 2011, has entered its third year.
Footsteps of revolution
The wind of revolution named the "Arab Spring" started to blow with the self-immolation of Tunisian Mohamed El-Bouazizi who was protesting the poor living conditions and then spread to many Arab countries with the help of social media sites. Protests spread from Tunisia to Egypt and then Libya to Yemen. Syrian people also began to question the system with the influence of the Arab spring that overtook the region.
Der'a was the breaking point
Two 16-year-old students were detained in Der'a as they wrote "The people want fall of regime" on a wall. Upon the determination of torturing of students in prison, thousands of Syrians marched to protest the Syrian regime for the first time. Protests are carried out on Fridays with various themes such as "Honor Friday", "Rage Friday" by dissidents ever since.
