ADANA, Turkey

The killer of a young female student whose death stunned Turkey last year has been shot dead in prison.

It has been reported that Ozgecan Aslan’s killer, Ahmet Suphi Altindoken, and Altindoken's father Necmettin, were attacked with a gun on Monday in Kurkculer Cezaevi prison in Adana, southern Turkey.

Ahmet Suphi Altindoken later died in hospital.

Necmettin Altindoken was shot in the hip and abdomen, and was rushed to hospital with his son.

The identity of the attacker has not been confirmed; an investigation is underway.

Ozgecan Aslan was killed on Feb 13, 2015, while she reportedly resisted a sexual assault in a minibus in Mersin, southern Turkey.

Aslan's attackers had burnt her body and her charred remains were found two days after she was reported missing.

Minibus driver Ahmet Suphi Altindoken, his father and his friend Fatih Gokce were later found guilty of the crime.

Soon after the killing, nationwide demonstrations were held to protest Aslan’s murder with women's rights activists demanding stricter laws to prevent violence against females.

Police in Adana have taken widespread security measures around the hospital where the Altindokens were taken. It has emerged that Suphi Altindoken and father were sharing the same ward.

Deputy PM says killing convicts in prison ‘unacceptable’

Speaking at a news briefing, Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said: "No matter what, killing a convict in a prison is unacceptable.

"It is definitely going to be revealed who are the delinquents. Our Adana High Court chief prosecutor has already taken the issue in hand and our Ministry of Justice has already tasked an inspector."
