SIIRT, Turkey
Five bodies were recovered in a dam river in Siirt province of southeastern Turkey, while operations to find another missing person continue, according to the Siirt governor.
Osman Parlakuser, his daughters Seval and Betul, and Fikret Tente and Ahmet Tente died after being carried away by high river waters, the Anadolu Agency (AA) learned. The swimmers were in the closed area while the dam gates opened as part of the daily routine of the dam operating company, Limak Holding said.
Ten others who were swimming and picknicking around the river were rescued.
"There was no overflow or malfunction with the dam gates as the extra water was released in accordance with daily working procedures," the Turkish official power administration confirmed.
"The citizens affected by the incident were in the no-enter zone," said a statement from the Limak Holding Company.
The bodies were sent to Siirt State Hospital morgue.
