A Turkish policeman was wounded Wednesday in a gun attack less than a kilometer from Istanbul’s busiest shopping street, police sources said.
The officer was wounded in the arm when three assailants opened fire on a police patrol in the Sururi neighborhood of Beyoglu -- around 500 meters north of Istiklal Caddesi, a pedestrianized street popular with locals and tourists on the city’s European side.
The 4.30 p.m. local time (1430GMT) attack occurred in a dead end street. The officer, whose condition is not thought to be life-threatening, was taken to Acibadem Taksim Hospital for treatment.
Police have launched a hunt for the attackers, backed by a helicopter.
