Regime forces on Tuesday attacked two opposition-held areas in Syria’s northwestern province of Latakia.
The assault comes 10 days after the cessation of hostilities agreement between the regime and opposition groups went into effect.
Al-Assad forces shelled the Turkmen Mountain region early on Tuesday, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency.
The assault came just hours after opposition troops thwarted an attempt by regime forces to capture two villages in the Turkmen Mountain region on Monday.
Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011 when the al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.
Since then, more than 250,000 people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to the UN.
