Uruguay have defeated Italy in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Group D match.
Nicknamed as La Celeste (The Sky Blue One), Uruguay wasted several chances against European opponents Italy at Estadio das Dunas in Natal, but finally managed to break the deadlock when their defender Diego Godin smashed a vital header in 81st minute of play, clinching the 1-0 triumph against Italy - commonly called as Azzurri (The Blues).
Italy, who preferred to close down after their midfielder Claudio Marchisio's red card in the 59th minute, started to work the ball in Uruguay's box to equalize in the remaining time, but failed to make progress.
After the final whistle, Uruguay advanced to Round of 16 in World Cup while Italy were eliminated in the group stages.
Meanwhile, in another game of the group, Costa Rica drew against England 0-0 in Belo Horizonte, meaning the Central American side completed the group with 7 points as leaders.
