Jannik Sinner defeats Daniil Medvedev to reach first US Open semifinal
Top-ranked Italian star continues historic run with dominant performance at Arthur Ashe Stadium
ISTANBUL
Jannik Sinner secured a spot in his first US Open men’s tennis semifinal on Thursday, defeating Daniil Medvedev in a hard-fought match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sinner, the world no. 1 in men's singles, won the quarterfinal with sets of 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, and 6-4.
"It was very tough. We know each other quite well," Sinner said after the match. "We played in Australia this year and then London. We knew it was going to be very physical."
Reflecting on the ebb and flow of the match, Sinner noted how the momentum shifted after the first break in each of the opening sets.
With this win, Sinner becomes the third Italian man to reach the US Open semifinals in the Open Era, joining Corrado Barazzutti (1977) and Matteo Berrettini (2019).
Sinner will face 25th-seeded Jack Draper on Friday, where a victory will secure his place in the final.
