ISTANBUL (AA) - An Istanbul court has decided to suspend Fenerbahce's Chairman Aziz Yildirim as it hears a case against him brought by former Chairman Recep Ozcan calling for Yildirim's dismissal.
Istanbul Anatolia 5th Civil Court of First Instance accepted Ozcan's request for temporary injunction, who said Yildirim was unfit to serve as chairman since his club membership must have expired by law after he was convicted of match-fixing charges.
Executive board members Ilhan Eksioglu and Sekip Mosturoglu were also affected by the decision.
The court decided to suspend Fenerbahce's chairman and two board members "until the case regarding the status of their club memberships was settled," a statement by the court said.
The court rejected the request for the installing of a trustee to oversee the club.
Fenerbahce became the center of attention for match-fixing allegations directed against them in a sweeping football investigation in summer 2011, as they were sitting atop a record of 16 wins and 1 draw in the 17 matches they played in the second half of the season. Chairman Aziz Yildirim was arrested on charges of match-fixing and forming an illegal organization.
He was convicted in July last year on charges of match-fixing, giving illegal incentive pay, as well as forming and leading a crime syndicate.
