A German football player in Borussia Dortmund, Emre Can on Friday tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

"Emre Can has tested positive for COVID-19. He is symptom-free and in domestic quarantine," Dortmund said on Twitter.

The Bundesliga club also wished him a quick recovery.

Infected by coronavirus, Can is ineligible to play for his team in Saturday's derby against Schalke in Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder left Italian powerhouse Juventus in January for Dortmund.

Having Turkish roots, Can has been playing for the German national team since 2015 to have 30 international caps.

In addition to Juventus, Can previously played for German clubs Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, and English team Liverpool.

He won the 2013 UEFA Champions League title with Bayern Munich.
