MOSCOW
Russia is to form a new branch of its armed services this year by creating the “Russian Aerospace Forces” according to the country’s military chief-of-staff, Valeri Gerasimov.
Gerasimov told reporters from RIA-Novosti on Tuesday that the new outfit would be created “through the merger of two existing types of armed forces – the Army Air Forces and Aerospace Defense."
Previously it had been reported that the new branch would be formed in 2016 as opposed to 2015.
Among the projects this new force will reportedly take part in is the creation and operation of an early-warning radar system designed to detect missile launches from space.
