Ukraine said on Tuesday that at least three people were killed in a Russian drone attack in the country’s northeastern city of Sumy, located almost 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the Russian border.

The Sumy Regional Military Administration said on Telegram that among those killed was a child, while one person was injured and two residential buildings were damaged due to the attack.

The Ukrainian Air Force claimed on Telegram that the country’s air defenses downed 42 out of 60 drones launched by Russia over Sumy, as well as the Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Kherson and Kharkiv regions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed three people were killed during the attack on Sumy in a statement on X, saying that such attacks can only be overcome through global unity.

“Investments in weapons production within Ukraine. Long-range strikes against Russian military logistics, military airfields, and troop bases. All of this can protect against Russian terror, but it must be sufficient—sufficient for life to prevail over Russian aggression,” he added.

Russian authorities have not yet commented on the attack or the claims.
