WASHINGTON

The United States recognized Somalia's government for the first time in more than two decades.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a meeting with visiting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Washington. After the meeting at a press conference, Clinton made the announcement on the decision.
Clinton said she was glad to announce this decision to recognize the Somali government for the first time since 1991.
Today was a turning point and the United States respected sovereignty of Somalia, she said.
Mohamud said that they appreciated the United States' support to Somali people.
Somalia was leaving a difficult period behind, he said.
Recognition will help Somalia receive greater assistance from U.S. and international aid agencies.
