Ukraine's interim President, Oleksandr Turchynov, approved a resolution on the partial mobilization of 40,000 reservist troops to reinforce its military.
Half of the reservists will be deployed in the armed forces and the other half will be part of the newly-formed national guards for the next couple of months.
The Ukrainian cabinet decided to supplement its current defense budget with over US$600 million on Sunday, the same day as Crimea's referendum.
The resolution is a reaction to Russia's interference into Ukraine's internal affairs and Crimea’s formal declaration of its independence following the results of the region’s referendum in which 96 percent voted in favor of joining Russia.
Violent clashes have been seen between anti and pro-Russian sides in other eastern cities, including Kharkiv and Donetsk, which have already left three dead.
