Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta has said he will resign on Friday after his Democratic Party backed a call for a new administration. The Democratic Party now hopes that the 39-year-old party leader Matteo Renzi will be able to replace him, and form a new administration.
During a party meeting in Rome, Renzi said the country could not go on in "uncertainty" with the existing leader Letta and he proposed a new government to take over until the end of the current parliamentary term in 2018.
Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta announced he would submit his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano at the presidential palace on Friday after his party called for a change in government.
Angelino Alfano, the leader of the center-right group that split from former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s party and shares power with the center-left Democratic Party, was guarded in his reaction to the potential change of leadership.
Meanwhile, Forza Italia, the opposition party of Berlusconi, has not decided yet on their political position.
Gianroberto Casaleggio, a co-founder of the Five Star movement in Italy, said he is doubtful the government can last until 2018: "I see a high instability situation. A 2018 forecast is very risky".
Giuseppe Civati, Renzi’s rival, didn’t back Renzi and said, “These days it is difficult to support Renzi because his position is changing constantly.”
