Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been given a ‘Rabaa Honor Award’ by the International Rabia Platform, a campaign group.
Organized by the Rabia Platform as well as Istanbul-based Divan Research and Training Association, the award ceremony was held in Istanbul on Friday.
Erdogan said in a message read out at the gathering, that he remembered the freedom, democracy and honor struggle of people in Rabaa Square to support Egypt’s first democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi.
On Aug. 14, 2013, Egyptian security forces opened fire on two protest camps in Cairo, killing at least 1,150 people, according to Human Rights Watch.
The protest camps in Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adawiya and Nahda squares were in support of Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president who had been ousted in a military coup weeks earlier.
