BAGHDAD
Kurdish Members of Parliament are to attend a session of Iraq’s parliament, a member of the Kurdistan Alliance has said.
Muhammed Halil told Anadolu Agency that “as a sign of goodwill,” members of Kurdistan Alliance will be present at the session on Sunday.
Kurdish lawmakers withdrew from the Iraqi Parliament on 1 July after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki accused Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) of sheltering terrorists and supporting Islamic States of Iraqand Levant (ISIL) militants.
According to a 2003 agreement between Iraq’s communities, the President is chosen from Kurds, the Parliament speaker from Sunnis and the Prime minister from Shias.
Tension between the Baghdad government and the Kurdish Regional Government has risen over the past fortnight as the Kurdish Regional Government has moved closer to independence.
Kurdish hopes for an independent state have been bolstered by Baghdad’s surrender of large parts of northern Iraq, as ISIL-led militant forces seized cities.
In certain areas, such as oil-rich Kirkuk, Kurdish Peshmerga forces moved in to prevent ISIL occupation.
