ALEXANDRIA
Egyptian courts in the coastal city of Alexandria on Tuesday slapped jail terms against 221 supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
Al-Raml Misdemeanor Court sentenced 39 Morsi backers to seven years in jail and another to eight years and a fine of 500 Egyptian pounds (around $71).
Al-Montazah Misdemeanor Court, meanwhile, sentenced 45 supporters of the ousted president to three years in hard labor and referred two juveniles to special courts for protesting.
The Sidi Gaber Misdemeanor Court also sentenced 129 Morsi supporters to three years in jail and referred five minors to a special court.
Egypt has launched a massive crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood since the army's July 3 ouster of Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president.
Thousands of supporters have been detained on incitement-to-violence charges.
The Brotherhood, which the interim government has recently designated as a terrorist organization, dismisses all charges against members and supporters as politically-motivated.
