ALEXANDRIA
Two people died late Wednesday when security forces dispersed rallies staged by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in the coastal city of Alexandria.
Ahmed Abdel Badie, a 23-year-old student, was shot dead when security forces dispersed a pro-Morsi rally in Geleem district in eastern Alexandria, his family said.
Another protester, Moustafa al-Hamroushi, died of wounds he sustained during the dispersal of the same rally, his family confirmed.
A number of pro-democracy protesters were reportedly injured, including two seriously, when police forces moved in to disperse pro-Morsi demonstrators in al-Soyouf district, sources and eyewitnesses said.
Clashes also erupted between demonstrators and security forces in Sidi Beshr district in eastern Alexandria. There were no reports of casualties.
The pro-Morsi National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy confirmed that two people were killed and three others seriously injured during the rallies.
According to the coalition, 25 people were arrested during the demonstrations.
But police chief Naser al-Abd said that at least 14 demonstrators were arrested during Wednesday's rallies.
He said that three policemen were shot and injured during confrontations with demonstrators.
Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, was removed from power by the military following mass protests against his rule.
Supporters of the ousted president denounce his ouster as a "military coup" and have been staging rallies on almost a daily basis to demand his reinstatement.
