NEW YORK
The United Nations General Assembly on Monday unanimously elected Danish politician Mogens Lykketoft as president of its 70th anniversary session.
The 69-year old Lykketoft, who was formerly Denmark's parliament speaker from 2011, was the only nominee for this post. His one-year term will start on Sept. 15.
"“What is now in front of Member States is the final stretch towards adopting a universal, people-centred, transformative development agenda that addresses the struggle of our lifetime. When implemented, it will enable us to eradicate poverty while keeping climate change at bay, building resilience, and creating inclusive and sustainable economic growth," Lykketoft told the assembly.
Lykketoft also listed his top priorities as improving human rights, and creating inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
He also said that he will give priority to the reform of the UN Security Council.
Lykketoft took over the presidency from Sam Kutesa of Uganda.
