CAIRO (AA) - A 50-member panel tasked with amending Egypt's constitution has voted for abolishing the Shura Council (the upper house of parliament).
Some 23 members voted for abolishing the Shura Council, while 19 opposed. Army representative Gen. Magd al-Din Barakat abstained. A final vote is scheduled in late November.
Egypt has two houses of parliament, the Shura Council and People's Assemby (lower house of parliament)
Any article must be passed by the panel with the approval of 75% of members.
The amendment of the constitution is a main component of a transitional roadmap imposed by the military establishment after its July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.
The roadmap also includes parliamentary and presidential elections.
