Ahmed al-Tayeb, grand imam of Egypt's Al-Azhar, held talks on Thursday with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi on the ongoing crisis in Syria.
According to an Azhar statement, the two men – who declined to talk to the press following the meeting – agreed to continue their consultations on the Syrian issue.
An Azhar source said that, during the meeting, the Grand Imam had called for stepped-up efforts to reach an agreement to resolve the crisis.
Al-Tayeb had also called for providing support to Syrian refugees fleeing the war-torn country, the source added.
Syria has been in the throes of civil conflict since March 2011 when a peaceful uprising against President Bashar al-Assad escalated into a civil war following a violent government crackdown.
According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict to date.
