SDF resumes shelling of residential neighborhoods in Syria’s Aleppo
More than 3,000 civilians evacuated from Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo, says Syrian Civil Defense
ISTANBUL
The PKK/YPG terror group, operating under the name of SDF, resumed shelling of residential neighborhoods in Aleppo in northern Syria on Wednesday evening, Syrian media reported.
According to Alikhbaria TV, the SDF bombed districts near the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods in the city.
At least six people, including five civilians, were killed and 39 others injured in SDF attacks in Aleppo since Tuesday.
The Syrian Civil Defense said that more than 3,000 civilians were evacuated on Wednesday, most of them from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, due to worsening humanitarian conditions and continued shelling by the SDF, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib extended the suspension of classes at public and private schools and universities across Aleppo on Thursday, citing the need to protect students and educational staff amid SDF attacks.
He also ordered the formation of a committee to monitor the conditions of displaced residents following the SDF shelling.
The Syrian army said early Wednesday that military positions of the SDF in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods are “legitimate targets” following the group’s escalation and “massacres” in the province.
On March 10, the Syrian presidency announced the signing of an agreement for the SDF’s integration into state institutions, reaffirming the country's territorial unity and rejecting any attempts at division.
Syrian authorities say that in the months since, the SDF has not shown any efforts to meet the terms of the agreement.
