Iran's UN envoy says Security Council would be 'rewarding aggressors' if Gulf-backed resolution adopted

HAMILTON, Canada

Iran's UN envoy warned Tuesday that a draft Security Council resolution backed by Gulf states condemning Iranian attacks on countries in the region would permanently damage the body's standing as the text was reportedly circulated ahead of a scheduled vote.

A Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-drafted resolution reportedly condemns Iran's missile and drone attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan and demands an immediate cessation of all attacks.

"Some Council members are attempting to reverse the roles and positions of victim and aggressor," Amir Saeid Iravani said at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York about the upcoming vote on Wednesday, adding: "They seek to reward the aggressors and punish the victim through a biased and politically motivated resolution."

"Such action, if adopted, would severely damage and undermine the credibility and legitimacy of the Council," he said, warning that the resolution would have lasting consequences.

"If adopted, it will be a stain on the credibility and reputation of the Security Council," Iravani said, adding that "if adopted, the aggressor, Israel and the United States, will be rewarded and emboldened to carry out further acts of aggression."

Iravani further warned over stakes extending well beyond Iran.

"Today, it is Iran. Tomorrow, it could be any other sovereign state," he said.

"The international community must act now to stop this bloody war against the Iranian people."

He also highlighted the toll of the US-Israeli attacks and argued that "they are deliberately and discriminately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure across my country."

Saying there are more than 1,300 civilian casualties, he also reported that the attacks have "destroyed 9,669 civilian sites, including 7,943 residential homes, 1,617 commercial and Service Centers."

"These figures continue to rise every day as the United States and Israel carry out continuous military attacks on war crimes across cities through Iran," he added.
