Iran's top lawmaker warns Trump against committing 'third mistake'

TEHRAN, Iran

The deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament warned Tuesday that any new “mistake” by the United States against Iran would draw a "decisive" response.

Hamidreza Haji Babaei, speaking during a meeting with the head of the Indonesian Parliamentary Group at the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), accused US President Donald Trump of “trampling on norms.”

Referring to the US-backed Israeli attack on Iran last June and US support for anti-government protests in the country, which Tehran has blamed on the United States and Israel, Babaei warned Washington against committing what he described as a “third mistake.”

The US president “does not even spare his friends,” he said, in a veiled reference to European countries and Ukraine.

The senior Iranian lawmaker alleged that by creating parallel bodies such as the “Board of Peace,” Trump seeks to legitimize bombings and the plundering of nations’ resources.

“Islamic countries must unite and adopt appropriate positions against aggressors and arrogant powers,” he said in his comments carried by Iranian media.

Earlier on Tuesday, speaking during an open session of parliament, Babaei said the “authority of the Islamic Republic has been consolidated globally,” adding that Iran’s “enemies cannot tolerate this authority.”

His remarks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, fueled by an American military buildup in the Persian Gulf and repeated threats of military action by Trump.

In recent days, several countries have stepped in and offered to mediate between Tehran and Washington to ease tensions, with Türkiye playing a particularly active role.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to meet US envoy Steve Witkoff in Istanbul on Friday.
