The death toll from Daesh attacks in the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit has risen to 26, according to a local military officer.

Militants attacked a police checkpoint in Al-Zuhoor district in central Tikrit late Tuesday before opening fire randomly on civilians.

"Twenty-six people were killed and 35 others injured in the attacks," Army Captain Saad Mohamed told Anadolu Agency.

In a statement, the Interior Ministry said Iraqi forces had managed to kill two suicide bombers during the attacks.

Iraqi authorities have imposed a curfew in Tikrit following the assault.

Daesh had overrun Tikrit in 2014 before Iraqi forces managed to recapture the city one year later.
