Two U.S. soldiers were killed in eastern Nangarhar province in Afghanistan, an official of the provincial government said on Saturday.
A Taliban infiltrator in the Afghan army has shot two U.S. soldiers dead before he got killed in a return fire, Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial government in Nangarhar told Anadolu Agency.
The incident took place in the restive Achin district of the eastern Nangarhar province where the U.S. and the Afghan forces were conducting an operation against the Daesh terrorists.
“I can confirm that an infiltrator has shot two Americans dead, and he has been killed in return fire,” he said.
The U.S. forces in Afghanistan have so far not commented.
The Taliban on their part have pronounced it as part of their ongoing annual offensives, and claimed four U.S. soldiers had been shot dead.
This is the third so called ‘green on blue attack’ in which Taliban infiltrators in the Afghan security forces have targeted members of the allied forces.
According to the Long War Journal, the total number of coalition deaths in such attacks reached 152 since 2008 while the number of wounded is 193.
