Virus continues to spread in Eurasia, Central Asia

Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia reports new cases

Virus continues to spread in Eurasia, Central Asia


BAKU 

Coronavirus cases and fatalities continued to rise across Eurasian and Central Asian countries on Wednesday.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan reported the country’s highest daily spike with 590 cases, bringing the tally to 14,305. The death toll reached 174 and 7,768 people have so far recovered from the disease.

More than 440,000 tests have so far been conducted in the country. A total of 6,363 are still receiving medical treatment.

Belarus

In Belarus, another 458 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus, bringing the total to 59,945. The number of recoveries reached 40,136 and the death toll hit 362.

A total of 901,904 tests have so far been conducted in the country.


Moldova

Moldova reported 364 fresh cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 15,078.

Five more people died of COVID-19 in the country, raising the death toll to 495. A total of 8,400 people have recovered.

Tajikistan

At least 63 more cases in Tajikistan pushed the overall count to 5,630, including 4,194 recoveries and 52 fatalities.

A total of 1,384 patients are still receiving treatment in Tajikistan, according to the Health Ministry.

The Asian Development Bank allocated $50 million grant to the country to alleviate the negative economic and social consequences of the outbreak.

Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan, 92 more people contracted the virus, raising the total to 6,847, including 19 deaths and 4,675 recoveries.

The Central Asian country has carried out 850,000 coronavirus tests so far. Over 2,100 patients are still under treatment.

Ukraine

In Ukraine, a total of 1,051 people lost their lives due to the virus. The tally of the cases reached 39,014, while 17,409 people have recovered.

The country eased some restrictions in Kiev and allowed opening of restaurants, cafes, pools, theatres and cinemas as long as social distancing is remained.


Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has confirmed 18,765 cases and 134 COVID-19-related fatalities so far. Recoveries increased by 71 to 11,585.

Last week, the first Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who stepped down from the position last year after nearly three decades in power, tested positive for the coronavirus.

Nazarbayev’s health condition is stable, and he remains in self-isolation, according to the health officials.

Georgia

Georgia confirmed a total of 917 cases, including 14 deaths and 771 recoveries.

Some 258 people in the country are under surveillance in hospitals, while 2,744 people are in quarantine, authorities said.

Worldwide

Since first appearing in China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 188 countries and regions. The US, Brazil, and Russia are currently the countries hardest hit in the world.

The pandemic has killed nearly 478,300 people worldwide, with more than 9.29 million confirmed cases and over 4.66 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
