BAMAKO
The Malian authorities have confirmed the country's second Ebola death, involving a nurse who came into contact with a patient who had come from neighboring Guinea.
Dramane Maiga, director of the Pastor Clinic in Bamako, told Anadolu Agency that a male nurse who had worked at the clinic had died on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to put the facility under quarantine.
"All patients will be monitored now, while police have surrounded the clinic to prevent anyone from entering it," Maiga said.
On Monday, the quarantine of nearly 25 people who had come into contact with the country's first case was lifted, with no new cases reported.
The first case – reported in late October – had involved a two-year-old girl who had come from Guinea. She succumbed to the virus on October 24.
In recent months, Ebola – a contagious disease for which there is no known treatment or cure – has killed roughly 4,800 people in West Africa.
The deadly virus has also reared its head in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in a handful of other countries outside Africa.
